CHAPERONE

Copyright 2016 – Robert E. Shandor

Deep in her heart, she’s feelin’ such pain

The tears she cries falling down like rain

Torn between lovers, past and new

Tryin’ desperately to figure out what she should do

I know that she loves me, but not like she did him

She’s made me a runner in a race that I can’t win

She can’t go back, and she can’t move on

Anchored where she is by her thoughts of times long gone

And all the times we spent together

I can’t say that we ever were alone

Some mem’ry from her past was always with us --

A hungry dog gnawing on a bone --

An ever-present, uninvited,

Intrusive chaperone

I came to know that her problem’s really mine

I could pretend I’m not wasting my time

But that won’t change what I already know, since

She can’t decide then it’s me who must be the one to go

And all the times we spent together

I can’t say that we ever were alone

Some mem’ry from her past was always with us --

A hungry dog gnawing on a bone --

An ever-present, uninvited,

Intrusive chaperone

Deep in her heart, she’s feelin’ such pain

The tears she cries falling down like rain

Torn between lovers, past and new

And tryin’ desperately to figure out what she should do

What she should do

What should I do
